After an uneventful weekend for the genre at the box office last week, Scott Charles Stewart’s PRIEST opened at #4 with 14.5 million this week. That’s down from LEGION‘s opening last year, which was also directed by Stewart and starred Paul Bettany. The film seemed to suffer from muddled marketing.
There are no other genre flicks in the Top 10, but James Wan’s INSIDIOUS is still hanging in there with $965,000 at #12, and Duncan Jones’ SOURCE CODE is right behind it at #13 with $875,000. Wes Craven’s SCREAM 4 continued its poor run at #24 with $280,000, and has still not yet made back it’s $40 million budget domestically.
With some big summer blockbusters on their way for the next few weeks, beginning with the new PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN next weekend, it’s slim pickings for horror fans. In fact, there isn’t another genre film hitting theaters until SUPER 8 next month.
