We’ve been keeping you in the loop with CLOUD ATLAS – a lofty sci-fi adaptation from the Wachowski brothers and Tom Tylwer – for awhile now, even given you casting updates before they spread wide online. For instance, we’ve known about Halle Berry and Hugo Weaving’s involvement for some time, though confirmation about such is just now getting some run. Not all is old news though folks, as it seems another new name has joined the production.
From THR comes a claim that English actor Ben Winshaw (I’M NOT THERE, BRIGHT STAR) has been added to the cast of CLOUD ATLAS. He joins not only Weaving and Berry, but Tom Hanks. Natalie Portman, Ian McKellan and James McAvoy have all been rumored to play a part in the film as well. Word is each actor will portray multiple characters.
Based on David Mitchell’s acclaimed novel – CLOUD ATLAS consists of six nested stories that take us from the remote South Pacific in the nineteenth century to a distant, post-apocalyptic future. Each tale is revealed to be a story that is read (or watched) by the main character in the next. All stories but the last one get interrupted at some moment, and after the sixth story concludes at the center of the book, the novel “goes back” in time, “closing” each story as the book progresses in terms of pages but regresses in terms of the historical period in which the action takes place. Eventually, readers end where they started, with Adam Ewing in the Pacific Ocean, circa 1850.
