The last update we got on Sam Raimi’s OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL came last month when there was word that Raimi was battling Disney over who to cast in the role of the elder witch in the film. It was between Hillary Swank and Michelle Williams. And the winner is…

Rachel Weisz! Bet you didn’t see that one coming. Not sure about the rest of you guys but I’d take the Oscar-winner Weisz over Swank and Williams anyday. Now mind you the actress isn’t officially signed on yet but we all know it’s probably just a matter of time.

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog Weisz will play Evanora, a powerful, evil witch who intends to rule the land. She is the sister of Theadora and tries to seduce her to the dark side. The gorgeous Mila Kunis has already signed on for the role of ‘Theadora’ with James Franco tapped to play ‘Oz.’

OZ follows a snake oil salesman who finds himself dealing with real magic when his balloon carries him into a fabled land and he runs into genuine witches.

Scheduled to hit theaters sometime in 2013 there’s no telling when production on OZ will get rolling but you can bet as soon as we find out we’ll be sure to pass the good word along to all of you.
