F*ck me runnin’, it’s really been over a year since we wrote about Joseph Kosinski redoing Disney’s sci-fi alien flick THE BLACK HOLE? Good gracious!
Well at least we know the project hasn’t, ahem, disappeared into a black hole (my apologies, that’s just awful!) No, it seems Kosinski still has the film on his plate, and since Disney dumped his other alien yarn HORIZONS (aka OBLIVION), he may have more time to explore THE BLACK HOLE.
Speaking with Comingsoon, Kosinski spoke at good length about TRON LEGACY, ending the interview with a status update on what he calls a “reimagining” of Disney’s 1979 flick. Peep it…
“Well, what I can say is it’s definitely not a sequel. That’s a reimagining of the concept. We know so much more about black holes now and the phenomena that surround them and the incredible effects on time and space that they have. The working, which allows for some really interesting concepts and stories to tell. Travis Beacham is writing the script. We’re working with him right now on it. And it’s just really exciting. It’s a really exciting reimagining of what it’s like to go in a deep interstellar mission to a black hole. And we’re going to preserve some of those iconic elements of the first one that people love. But beyond that, I can’t really say much!”
Ah, so more of a tease, huh? That’s alright, at least we know the film is starting to find some traction, with the script currently being ironed out.
For those who missed the original, here’s the synopsis:
For five years the crew of the PALOMINO has ranged through deep space, searching for evidence of alien life–with no result. Then, their mission almost at an end, they discover a giant collapsar–the largest black hole ever encountered–and, drifting perilously near it, is the long-lost legendary starship CYGNUS…Incredibly, the ship is not a lifeless hulk. Its commander–the genius who designed the CYGNUS and planned its epic voyage–still survives, served by a horde of mechanical slaves. But Commander Hans Reinhardt has no desire to be rescued. He has a rendezvous with the incredibly hellish forces of the collapsar–and he plans to take the PALOMINO’S crew along on his doomed adventure.
Sounds cool, right? Hopefully Beacham can adapt a script strong enough to fast-track this sucker before Kosinski moves on to something else entirely. Besides, it wouldn’t hurt to get back in the good graces of Disney…know what I mean?!?
