In what is probably good news for some and bad news for others, it appears Paramount has had enough with their failed attempts to resurrect DUNE. Count me clear in the bummer camp!

Deadline is reporting that after a 4-year span of trying to get a legitimate DUNE script ready for shooting, the studio is saying sayonara once and for all. Not only has a script adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel proven extremely difficult to achieve, Paramount’s rights for the property has officially lapsed.

None of this should come as much of a surprise, as we alerted you last November that it was a ticking clock situation for Paramount. They had till this Spring to get slate an official production schedule, and as you know, yesterday was the damn vernal equinox. Time sprung forward indeed!

Hopefully another studio nabs the rights to DUNE and gives it another go. of course, if David Lynch had his troubles back in the 80s, who can aptly make what some would deem an un-filmable book nowadays? And who’s got at least $100 million to put towards the budget? That’s a tough one, ay?

DUNE is set in a distant galaxy in the far future. The year is 10191. Arrakis is a desert planet, Arrakis is the only source of ‘Melange’ a vital drug used by the Guild Navigators for space travel from star system to star system. Two rival families, The Atreides and The Harkonnens, fight for control of the mining operations of Melange on Arrakis. When his father Duke Leto Atreides is assassinated by the evil Baron Harkonnen.

Duke Leto’s son Paul and Paul’s mother Lady Jessica flee deep into the desert and are befriend by the Fremen, natives of Arrakis. Due to the influence of the ‘Melange’ Paul learns he has special powers and he can see into the future. Paul unites the Freman and forms a army of warriors and leads them into battle against Baron Harkonnen and the corrupt Emperor Padishah Shaddam IV who is in league with the Harkonnen’s and vows to avenge his father and sets out to liberate Arrakis and it’s people from the Emperor’s rule and fulfill his destiny.
