Doom getting a 3D reboot courtesy of Universal Pictures?

Take this with a grain of salt, since there doesn’t seem to be anything remotely official about it. That said, who’d really be surprised?

Aussie site What’s Playing is reporting that Universal Pictures is jumping on the reboot train with DOOM. According to the site, the studio is “script scouting” for a treatment that will heavily focus on the 3D possibilities for the film. Not much else is known beyond that.

Universal has taken a lot of heat these last couple days because they shelved Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS. If this report is true, they’re probably not going to win any of their detractors back. The first film was a complete bust, everyone can pretty much agree with that, so another shot at the title isn’t the craziest – or worst – idea I’ve ever heard. However, the fact that they’re potentially falling back on an established name-brand instead of going forward with a fresh horror project from one of cinema’s visionaries has got to raise an eyebrow. After all, this will be just another video game movie.

Hopefully we’ll get more info on this soon.
