The vampire comedy that seems to be arriving about 10 years too late, VAMPS, continues to cast up. The flick, which reunites Alicia Silverstone with her CLUELESS director Amy Heckerling, recently added TV actress Kristen Johnston, who is best remembered for appearing on “Third Rock from the Sun”. Can this thing be any more irrelevant?

Well, that depends. Via a press release issues today, actors Wallace Shawn, Justin Kirk, Dan Stevens and Todd Barry have all boarded VAMPS. Out of all of them, Shawn might be the only one that really stands out; the actor will always be the guy who says “inconceivable” in THE PRINCESS BRIDE to me, although he has a pretty distinguished career as a stage actor and playwright. (He’s also the voice of the T-Rex in the TOY STORY movies.) As for the others: Kirk is a co-star on Showtime’s stoner series “Weeds”; Stevens is a British guy ; Barry is a stand-up comedian.

VAMPS tells the modern day tale of two young beautiful female vampires (Alicia Silverstone, Krysten Ritter) living the good nightlife in New York until love enters the picture and each has to make a choice that will jeopardize her immortality.

Shawn will portray Dr. Van Helsing, a well-known vampire expert and hunter; Kirk will portray Vadim, a Russian vampire always on the prowl for a good time; Stevens will portray Joey Van Helsing, a college student smitten with Stacy (Krysten Ritter) and; Barry will portray Ivan, blood-thirsty vampire Cisserus’ (Sigourney Weaver) loyal assistant.

Filming begins this week in Detroit.
