Joe Dante’s 3D, PG-13 suspense thriller THE HOLE makes it’s theatrical debut in Italy this month, and to get a bit more insight into the film, a trio of lengthy behind-the-scenes featurettes have been unveiled by the good peeps at MovieSet. To hear about everything from in-scene specifics, the unconventional use of 3D and other cool shite…get down with the new clips below!
But before we get into the crux of the featurettes, let’s contextualize. THE HOLE commences when:
After moving into a new neighborhood, brothers Dane & Lucas and their neighbor Julie discover a bottomless hole in the basement of their home. They find that once the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed. With strange shadows lurking around every corner and nightmares coming to life, they are forced to come face to face with their darkest fears to put an end to the mystery of THE HOLE.
Okay, now that we’re caught up, what do these new behind-the-scenes looks have to offer?
In the first clip, known as “Scene Story,” we literally hear the 1st Assistant Director (A.D.) Carl Mason speak about a scene they’re about to shoot, in which Chris Massoglia’s character, Dane, wanders around the house with a baseball bat after hearing a strange noise in the hall.
Next up is a clip called “Creepy Carl’s Room.” Here we watch the crew gear up to shoot a scene in which a character’s room is rendered completely dark. Kinda cool to see all the different light bulbs and squibs hooked up to them to create an instant blackout.
Lastly we have a spot labeled “3D Package,” in which the crew talks at good length about the use of 3D technology. What struck me right off the bat was, much like the way Cameron used 3D in AVATAR, the effect has much more of an immersive, pull you in type feel rather than your historical method of shite leaping off the screen at you. I liked that distinction.
