A short time ago we relayed a pretty amusing missive about Summit seeking Oscar caliber directing talent to bring TWILIGHT’s final entry, BREAKING DAWN, to the silver screen. Such preliminary names in said search included Gus Van Sant, Sofia Coppola and Bill Condon. And we all had a good laugh, didn’t we?!? Well, according to the L.A. Times, a new name has been tossed into the ring, and that name is none other than English director Stephen Daldry (THE READER).
Daldry (seen right), whose workload seems rather light at the moment, definitely has the prestige Summit solicits. The dude has been nominated thrice for best director, once for each film he’s directed: BILLY ELLIOT (2000), THE HOURS (2002) & THE READER (2008), which garnered Kate Winslet a long overdue acting statuette.
Such a resume certainly makes tackling a tween populist franchise all the more unlikely, but hey, you never know. Maybe Daldry’s a clandestine team-Jacobite.
Seriously though, this seems even more farfetched than the first round of names in Summit’s search (save for maybe Van Sant). Here’s a dude (Daldry, I mean) who clearly shepherds quality over quantity, making only one movie every three or four years. The TWILIGHT SAGA on the other hand, boasts quantity over quality, as seen by a never ending spate of unwatchable movies made from unreadable books (TRUE ROMANCE, yo!)
Still, I find this all pretty entertaining. And I maintain that, at the right price, Summit will eventually find their man or woman. Maybe not their first-fifth (okay, 25th) choice to take the job, but we’ll ultimately see someone take the bait.
So what do you all say? Is Daldry the right fit? You think he’ll accept? Is there a particular director you either want or can see directing BREAKING DAWN? Do you even care? Drop a few shells below!
BREAKING DAWN cutie Anna Kendrick!
