So what’s the best retribution for getting thoroughly lambasted at the Oscars…by your ex-wife no less? Re-release the highest grossing motion picture of all time on expensive 3D projectors and watch your coin multiply, that’s how!
A report out of THR states that James Cameron and Fox are entertaining the notion of re-releasing AVATAR this summer, primarily on 3D screens. Not only that, deleted scenes from the original cut may actually be re-inserted in the film to create an even longer technological marvel. 40 minutes longer to be crude about it. Okay then.
While most will probably find this nothing more than an egregious cash grab, the move has been said to come about when Cameron and Fox figured they could have made more money if they were able to retain the 3D and Imax theaters that were bought by Disney to make way for ALICE IN WONDERLAND. As Cameron puts it:
“The word we’re getting back from exhibitors is we probably left a couple hundred million dollars on the table as a result.”
Not only that, Cameron, a supposed cinematic genius, was not aware that IMAX theaters allow up to 170 minutes of analog screen time when he assembled his first cut of AVATAR. Conventional wisdom says Cameron would be better suited to add ten minutes to his already 160 minute cut and that way he can re-release the film largely on IMAX theaters instead of adding 40 minutes of new scenery.
Also, and we’re not getting into this much, but Cameron says he plans to re-release TITANIC in 3D theaters come 2012:
“We’re targeting spring of 2012 for the release (of a 3D version of Titanic), which is the 100 year anniversary of the sailing of the ship.”
And with that last tidbit, I’m off to the john to induce vomiting.
