Well it seems Paramount Pictures are going ahead with their idea on ‘micro-budget movies.’ We’ve heard this idea tossed around in the past several months but the talk has finally turned to action it seems!
You see the guys over at IndieWire are saying Paramount are moving forward with Insurge Pictures, a division for micro-budget movies that’ll start with 10 films, each of which will have a $100,000 budget. That’s $1 Million for ten movies folks. Now-a-days you can’t get a decent actor in your flick for $1 Million. So what’s the deal?
Well it’s no surprise where this idea came from, is it? PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. After that supernatural adventure made Paramount a ridiculous amount of money they started tossing around this idea of ‘micro-budget movies.’ And now they’re going with it. Good for them. But will it work? It’s actually pretty interesting. Read on for the details!
Apparently Insurge Pictures aren’t interested in snatching up indie flicks from festivals and such. No. Instead Insurge will be hiring entire filmmaking teams to tackle projects from the starting line with this $100,000 budget idea. According to Insurge ‘they hope the movies will serve as a low budget proving ground for new talent and intend to release the movies theatrically.’ That’s actually pretty damn cool. Giving new filmmakers a chance to make quality flicks for chump change and still see them get into theaters? Not a bad idea at all…
“Aren’t you tired of being fed the same movies wrapped in different paper? We want to find and distribute crazy, unpredictable, and hopefully awesome movies – movies that make you want to line up to see at your local theater with all your friends (and us). Movies that a big studio would never release because they’re too risky, too silly, and they don’t star Sandra Bullock.”
That comes from Insurge Pictures’ official website, which has seemed to have been taken down for the time being. The logo above also came from the site. Now I’m actually a big fan of stick figures so I’m digging it. Ready for another kicker? ‘The studio will develop an online community to fuel the initiative and is expected to support their goals with additional elements that are still to be announced. Fans of the site [on Facebook and Twitter] will be invited into the production process and potentially involved all the way through a movie’s eventual release.’ Their focus will be on comedies, animated films and of course, horror flicks.
Well damn that’s a lot to take in. And that’s not even the official annoucement, which should be coming any day now. So what do you guys think? These ‘micro-budget’ flicks a good idea? Hell seems like a decent enough idea to me, especially for the studio. Each flick is practically guranteed to make money right? Most probably prone to make a lot of money.
