Last month we entertained the notion of Sam Raimi, in the wake of being dumped by the SPIDER-MAN franchise, directing a new film version of THE SHADOW. A lot can change in a month, as we now know Raimi will not direct such a project, though he still plans to produce. We also know the project seems to have migrated from Sony to Fox, under a million dollar acquisition buyout from producer Emma Watts. So…who the hell is gonna direct this joint?
Word out of Latino Review is David Slade, director of the Raimi produced 30 DAYS OF NIGHT and the inevitable hit that is TWILIGHT: ECLIPSE, may be the man for the job. Makes sense given his already established working relationship with Mr. Raimi, not to mention the heat factor dude will be feeling this summer after droves of wet tweenie boppers with a predilection for ab-watching turn his name to gold.
For those new to the whole SHADOW mythos, dude has a long history, covering various mediums. For our purposes here, I say we rundown a film synopsis from the 1994 Russell Mulcahy work:
Based on the 1930’s comic strip, puts the hero up against his arch enemy, Shiwan Khan, who plans to take over the world by holding a city to ransom using an atom bomb. Using his powers of invisibility and “The power to cloud men’s minds”, the Shadow comes blazing to the city’s rescue with explosive results.
Funny how Raimi looks to produce this new version, as I’ve always mixed THE SHADOW up with Raimi’s own DARK MAN…though the latter is an admittedly better film.
