Is Warner Brothers really in talks to make a Space Invaders movie?

Is a SPACE INVADERS movie something you’d be interested in?

Well according to the L.A. Times, Warner Brothers is in preliminary discussions to bring the granddaddy of all cosmic-set shooters to the big screen. Of course, considering how filmic adaptations of Missile Command is a step away from being green-lit at Fox, with the same going for Asteroids over at Universal – it only makes sense the precursor to such projects gets its own multi-media makeover. But will it actually happen?

If, and it’s quite a mighty if, Warner Bros. does lock the rights from the Japanese manufacturer Taito (who originally launched the game), word is heavy-hitting Hollywood producers Mark Gordon, Jason Blum and Guymon Casady could be brought in to oversee the project. Quite a coup that would be for Warner, seeing how such commercially and critically successful works as SPEED, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, 2012, THE MESSENGER, and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY have been made under the watchful eye of those men (mostly Gordon, to be fair).

Even the most pedestrian of gamers (like myself) know that, given how primitive shite like SPACE INVADERS was back in the day, there’s exponential room to expand this sucker into a fully immersive, interactive experience the games of today offer. Which is why, given how little back-story was offered in the original game, we’ve yet to learn the exact avenue a potential movie version would travel.

One thing we can all bank on though I’m sure…you know this sucker’s going 3D. How can it not?
