It’s been over three months since we had an update for James McTeigue’s morbid period-thriller THE RAVEN, but I guess the worth is in the wait, because we’ve got a pair of big names in current negotiations to headline the project. According to /Film, both Ewan McGregor (THE GHOST WRITER) and Jeremy Renner (THE HURT LOCKER) are in line to bring the last days of Edgar Allan Poe to the big screen. Dig it…
The last we heard of THE RAVEN, director James McTeigue (V FOR VENDETTA, NINJA ASSASSIN) was explaining how the flick would mirror a cross between Poe’s actual poem (“The Raven”) and David Fincher’s SE7EN. We also learned that the flick spans the final five days of Poe’s life, as he joins the hunt for a serial murderer who has been offing people in the fashion his stories suggest.
We also know Hannah Shakespeare (“The Ghost Whisperer”) and Ben Livingston co-wrote a script for the film, which currently holds an unspecified 2011 release.
So what do ya think…is McGregor and Renner a good pairing for this type of flick? McGregor has been known to dabble in dark genre fare (NIGHT WATCH, SHALLOW GRAVE) and Renner is hot off a well deserved Oscar nod for his grueling performance in THE HURT LOCKER. Both these dude have been kicking around for years, so inexperience isn’t the issue…it’s whether or not either, if cast as Poe, has the gravitas to inhabit such a well known figure. I personally have faith in either man!
