Way back in September Eric told us about the AKIRA remake scoring a pair of talented writers in Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus. Almost six months later and we’ve finally got a look at who might be directing!
According to Variety, Allen and Albert Hughes are currently talking with Warner Bros. about stepping in to direct AKIRA. The Hughes Brothers huh? Well they’re fresh off their post-apocalytpic BOOK OF ELI and considering ELI writer Gary Whitta is also working on AKIRA I’d say this is a pretty easy choice. What says you guys? You think The Hughes Brothers can bring us a sweet AKIRA flick?
The live-action film is based on Katsuhiro Otomo’s graphic novel which also spawned a cult favorite 1988 anime film that was directed by Otomo. Here’s a really quick rundown of AKIRA: A secret military project endangers neo-tokyo when it turns a biker gang member into a rampaging psionic psychopath that only two kids and a group of psionics can stop. One major difference of the new film is that it’ll be set in New Manhattan, a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years earlier. AKIRA is coming from Andrew Lazar’s Mad Chance with Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson.
Remember ladies and gents, The Hughes Brothers aren’t signed on yet but I’m sure it’s just a matter of time. So what says you guys? Any big AKIRA fans out there feel like spitting their opinion on this directing choice? Shoot some bullets below and keep it here for more on AKIRA as we hear it!
Asian adult film star Akira Lane (above) has nothing to do with the film but she looks nice and has the first name Akira.
