According to The Hollywood Reporter, Syfy is bringing classic fairy tales to its Saturday night movie line-up. And what better tales to start with other than HANSEL & GRETAL and LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD. But these aren’t going to be your average fairy tales…

Syfy plans to update and contemporize the tales for a their Saturday night audience. HANSEL & GRETAL will take place years after the original story, with Hansel returning to the witch’s lair… for revenge. LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD is about a descendant of Littl Red who learns her whole family is part of a secret society… of wolf hunters.

Thomas Vitale, executive vp programming and original movies at Syfy, is pretty damn excited about the new line-up of updated fairy tales to the network: It’s exciting to take a treasured brand and put our own sideways spin on it. By turning familiar timeless stories inside out, we’re creating an entertaining new genre for our popular Saturday night movie franchise.

Popular indeed. Apparently each of their Saturday night original movies takes in about 1.8M viewers… not bad at all. The new Fairy Tale line-up will kick off with BEAUTY AND THE BEAST at the end of the month (February 27)… now that should be interesting…
