Looks our man JP has been championing this cryptic RED RIDING trilogy; an ostensible 300+ minute investigation into the Yorkshire Ripper killings in England in the seventies and eighties. Well, if you all don’t mind, I’m crashing this f*ckin’ party with a sweet behind-the-scenes making of video for the flick (courtesy of Hulu).
Based on the novel by David peace (adapted by FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS scribe Tony Grisoni), the trilogy is obviously broken up into 3 separate films, each with its own heralded filmmaker.
The first flick in the trilogy, entitled RED RIDING: 1974, is directed by Julian Jerrold (KINKY BOOTS), and finds a rookie journalist looking to solve the increasingly vexing case of a serial killer on the loose. Andrew Garfield, David Morrissey, John Henshaw, Anthony Flanagan, Jennifer Hennessey, and Mary Jo Randal star.
Second up is RED RIDING: 1980, directed by Oscar winner James Marsh (MAN ON WIRE), and continues the aforementioned plotline. It stars Warren Clarke, Paddy Considine, James Fox, David Calder, Ron Cook, Nicholas Woodeson, Maxine Peak, Tony Pitts and Jim Carter.
Lastly there’s RED RIDING: 1983, directed by Anand Tucker (SHOP GIRL, LEAP YEAR). This edition focuses on the seemingly untouchable, corrupt West Yorkshire police, and the true evil mastermind behind the child abductions and murders of the last 14 years, can’t resist doing it again. Against them, a fat useless lawyer, and one remorseful copper. Sean Bean, Sean Harris, Lisa Howard, Chris Walker, Shaun Dooley, Jim Carter and Steven Robertson all take part.
So there ya have her, folks. 3 films, 3 directors, one cinematic event!
Not only has the RED RIDING trilogy made its festival rounds this past year, IFC recently featured it as road show attraction in both L.A. and New York. In addition, it’s been known for awhile now that Ridley Scott is in line to remake the trilogy, with a current 2012 release date attached to that project.
