Remember when Tim Burton hoisted an original voice in flicks like BEETLE JUICE and EDWARD SCISSORHANDS? Whatever happened to that guy? Don’t get me wrong, I’m stoked to see his version of ALICE IN WONDERLAND (due March 5th), but it just seems like the dude is far too busy with remakes (PLANET OF THE APES) and saccharine Disney adaptations these days. And no doubt days to come as well, with word hitting that Burton might just follow up his new flick with yet another adaptation, next in line being SLEEPING BEAUTY. Or is it?
Well Harry over at AICN locked a fascinating tidbit from one in Burton’s camp, namely how Tim might wanna take the classic children’s story in another direction. Peep it…
“Hey folks, Harry here with the coolest whisper I’ve heard in a while. I was chatting to a fella I know tonight, and this person heard that Tim Burton is developing another classic Disney fairy tale in a quasi Live Actiony kinda way. It seems that Tim has a hankering for SLEEPING BEAUTY… but not really… You see, he’s going to tell the story from Maleficent’s point of view. In fact, it’ll be called MALEFICENT.”
MALEFICENT is a pretty fly title, and with the recent success of darker animated flicks like CORALINE, Burton may find a nice palette to inject a Disney flick with his own bleaker sensibilities. Of course, the dude has always cut his own path. Again though, I just long for the days when Burton directed his own scripts (or at least his own stories). I’d like to see him get back to that way of working.
Anne Hathaway will be seen in ALICE IN WONDERLAND!
