One of my all time favorite sci-fi / horror films ever is John Carpenter’s THE THING, from its moody atmosphere to its haunting musical score and those crazy special effects, THE THING is what’s known as ‘a good time all around.’
So when news came back a while ago the f*cker was getting remade (a remake of a remake… talk about irony), I almost blew a gasket. Talk about sacrilege! Then even more reports trickled in and we found out that a remake wasn’t in the works, but a prequel, and I became a bit more ok with it. Damn stoked at the idea, when it all comes down to it.
But movies like this are announced and never made all the time. Well, not this time. According to Production Weekly (via their TWITTER page), Universal is moving ahead with the prequel, with hopes to begin filming in Toronto in March. March! That’s only a few months away!
To quote the Tweet verbatim, Universal’s prequel to John Carpenter’s classic thriller “The Thing,” is due to begin filming March and continue till June in Toronto.
The prequel will be directed by Matthijs van Heijningen, Jr., from the screenplay by Ronald D. Moore and the dude who wrote the NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST. remake (ugh!), Eric Heisserer. But what we want to know is, what the flip will it be about? Remember the dog in the beginning and the helicopter out for shooting practice? The film will essentially follow the events that took place at that camp, theoretically ending with the helicopter dog hunt.
Talk about a sequel I can get behind! And to start filming in March? I guess they better get crackin’ on their casting efforts if they want to make this thing as bitchin’ as humanly possible!
