Looks like James Cameron is continuing to yank our chains about what the hell he’s up to following his game-changing uber-spectacle AVATAR. In the last couple of weeks we’ve heard the dude was poised to remake FANTASTIC VOYAGE, tackle DOOMSDAY PROTOCOL, helm a sci-fi samurai event film, possibly expand AVATAR into a franchise, all the while staying committed to his long lingering BATTLE ANGEL.
Whew!
Well now, according to MTV, Cameron might take the reins on a FORBIDDEN PLANET retelling. No, really! From Cameron’s own lips, he says “That’s a project that I’m actively involved in, but I haven’t made any decisions about it yet,” adding “I love Forbidden Planet.”
When MTV a year ago caught up with J. Michael Straczynski (“Babylon 5”), who at the time was hard at work on a FORBIDDEN PLANET script, he offered this:
“I’ve always wanted to do something involving ‘Forbidden Planet.’ It’s my favorite science-fiction film of all time. I’ve watched the rights go from one company to the next. I heard that the rights at Dreamworks were about to expire and I went to Joel Silver and said I think if you move quickly you can grab it and I can write it. And he did. It’s the dream of a lifetime to play in that universe.”
About the specifics of the project, Straczynski added:
“It’s not a remake. It’s not a reimagining. It’s not exactly a prequel…you’ll have to see it. It’s something that no one has thought of when it comes to this storyline.”
As far as said script is concerned for Cameron, the AVATAR director notes: “I haven’t seen it yet, I’m supposed to get it here pretty soon.”
And there you have it folks, more cruel tantalization.
All I know is I do not trust a damn thing Cameron has to say regarding future projects. Until I see a trailer for his next work, I’m not even going to speculate.
