Will Avatar sequel?

With James Cameron’s 3-D live action epic AVATAR looking to destroy global box-office in the coming weeks, discussion regarding the man’s follow up schedule has been a heated point of speculation as of late. A couple days ago we relayed the T-2 director was hashing out the Shane Salerno scripted sci-fi event flick DOOMSDAY PROTOCOL. Yesterday we noted how a 3-D remake of the 1966 film FANTASTIC VOYAGE was next on the visionary’s docket. Well, today we’ve got a fascinating inkling about the possibility of AVATAR sequels already being mapped out.

Promoting her new book “The Futurist: The Life and Films of James Cameron,” Time Magazine writer Rebecca Keegan spoke with AMC about such matters, noting:

“One of the fun things I got to do was sit in on these meetings with scientists, writers and James Cameron, and they would talk about the whole world of Pandora. They were hammering out all these scientific details. They were compiling what would essentially be a whole Wikipedia that would be used for sequels. It is definitely on the minds of the people behind this project. They have gone to great lengths. One of the things I sat in on was them talking about some theoretical plots for sequels. Cameron hopes that this is a movie that does well enough that it is able to become a franchise.”

One of the other things I found interesting in the interview is how Cameron actually wanted to bring another long-lingering project of his, BATTLE ANGEL, to life prior to AVATAR. But one of the things that made him do the latter film first, was a 5 minute sample clip (which cost a whopping $10 million alone) he showed Fox, in which the technological advances Cameron and crew had at their disposal were much more suited and aligned with AVATAR, as opposed to the even more grand designs BATTLE ANGEL calls for. In otherwords, if AVATAR is 60:40 3-D/CGI and live-action, we can expect maybe 80:20 the next go around.
