So our horror and Sc-Fi loving colleagues over at H2omotionpictures have just landed some interesting tidbits regarding the 3-D remake of 1987 horror-flick-lite THE GATE. Perhaps more shocking than Alex Winter directing the film (yes, Bill of Bill and Ted), turns out H.R. Giger, the dude we most associate with designing the look of the actual alien in ALIEN is contributing to the design of the creatures in this film as well. No joke!
Written by longtime Assistant Director Kerric Macdonald (MAX, SEVERANCE), THE GATE is about:
Three kids who release a horde of demons from a hole in their backyard. What follows is a battle between good and evil as the kids struggle to overcome a hell that is literally taking over the Earth.
And despite retaining a PG-13 rating, Giger’s design of the new ghouls looks to enjoy much greater screen-time than in the original. But that’s not all they look to enjoy. Apparently these amphibious looking baddies like to get their alcohol on. According to an outline briefing:
“…That night the basement is swarming with the little frog-like beasts. They are kind of cute—in an ugly way—but mix these creatures with beer and it’s a dangerous combination. Pretty soon they are attacking with razor-sharp teeth and claws.”
Nice, I always did wanna see Critters on the sauce. Hopefully this will mix the right dose of horror and humor those classic ‘80s creature features used to have in spades.
