It had to happen sooner than later, and I’m stoked it was a little indie flick that only cost $10K to do it. Over this past weekend, SAW VI was not only dethroned from the number one spot at the box office, but it lost more than half it’s audience from SAW V, with an estimated box office take of just $14.8M, the lowest of the series since SAW II.
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY expanded to a nationwide release and raked in about $22M over the weekend, taking the number one spot, and proving that just because it’s Halloween, doesn’t mean the B.O. has to belong to SAW. Given, the sudden lack of SAW audience probably had to do with the crappiness of SAW V, and most seem to think SAW VI was one of the better entries of the series (see your 69 cents for the verdict).
I thought SAW VI was just ‘ok,’ but thought it was rather boring. I’ve also come to the conclusion that I could give a flying f*ck about the series at this point. It could have been the best movie ever and I’d probably still be bored. THE VAMPIRE’S ASSISTANT, the other horror release this past weekend didn’t even crack the top 5, taking in only $6.3M. Not that surprising, as everything about that flick look and sounded stupid.
The PARANORMAL ACTIVITY train keeps on moving steadily ahead, and I couldn’t be happier in seeing the film succeed. Now the big question remains: how much bank will it make over the Halloween weekend?
