The Hollywood Reporter announced this morning that Mike Mitchell, the director of SHREK THE THIRD, has been signed on to direct MONSTER SQUAD for Warner Bros. Pictures. Wait, what? MONSTER SQUAD? Since when the crap are they remaking Fred Dekker’s THE MONSTER SQUAD???
Oh wait, they’re not. Sorry to induce heart attacks and hissy fits out there, but this MONSTER SQUAD is actually the supernatural action comedy formerly known as NIGHTCRAWLERS. Apparently NIGHTCRAWLERS wasn’t a good enough name, so they changed it to MONSTER SQUAD. In other news, this is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard of.
Written by Brad Copeland from a spec script by Brian Lynch, this MONSTER SQUAD goes a bit like this: a neurotic father must turn to a childhood tormentor to face his lifelong fear of the dark and the monsters who have haunted him.
Yeesh. But hey, at least it’s not a remake of the real MONSTER SQUAD, right? It’s unknown what the film’s tone is going to be like, but as Mitchell’s other directing credits include DUECE BIGELOW: MALE GIGOLO, I’m gonna say this will likely play for laughs versus any real scares. But we shall see.
