According to Variety the Robert Rodriguez exploitation grindhouse flick MACHETE has been picked up for international distribution by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group. Hells yeah.
Starring Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Cheech Marin, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, and Rose McGowan, MACHETE centers on a former Mexican police officer who turns the tables on the masterminds who double-crossed him.
The concerning thing about this news is that there is still no word on North American release. Will it go theatrical? Will it go straight to DVD? With the cast it has lined up, and Rodriguez at the helm alongside Ethan Maniquis, I can’t see it going STD. On the other hand, GRINDHOUSE was a financial failure, so it may be tough landing theatrical distribution here in the states.
The flick sounds too awesome for DVD though, so here’s to keeping our fingers crossed! No release dates have been announced for the international territories, but it’s only a matter of time. Keep it here for more on MACHETE, especially the North American distribution, as we hear it!
