Over a year and a half ago we reported to you that director David Gordon Green (PINEAPPLE EXPRESS) had signed on to direct the remake of Dario Argento’s SUSPIRIA (check out that story HERE).
Since then we haven’t heard squat about the remake, whether it’s still on, who’s lined up to write or star–absolutely nothing. Until today. Buried deep in a totally unrelated article from Variety, producer Luca Guadagnino dropped some info. on the remake, which he’s producing for First Sun (a production company), mainly that it’s lining up to happen, with a scheduled shooting date to start in 2010.
All aspirations, hopes, and dreams that they simply forgot about remaking SUSPIRIA have now been thown out the window. There’s no reason given to why it’s taken so long to get the project offthe ground, but as there’s not a huge studio behind the remake, I’d say it has a lot to do with money (or lack there of). Looks like they finally got the cash, and the remake is actually going to happen. Bummer.
Not that I think Green isn’t the right choice, I actually think he’d bring a lot to the table, I just don’t see the reason to remake that film. It’s a classic, it holds up today as a scary and entertaining watch, and there’s really no reason to make another one. But remakes make money, so there we are.
