It seems like we’ve been waiting forever to hear who will be helming the remake of the Guillermo del Toro-produced THE ORPHANAGE, and it looks like the looming question has finally been answered.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Larry Fessenden has signed on to direct the remake for New Line Cinema, based on his script (which he co-wrote with del Toro). Who the flock is that? Fessenden directed an episode of last season’s FEAR ITSELF, as well as THE LAST WINTER with Ron Perlman from a few years back. Not exactly a light weight.
The original film, and subsequently the remake, is about Laura, who purchases her beloved childhood orphanage with dreams of restoring and reopening the long abandoned facility as a place for disabled children. Once there, Laura discovers that the new environment awakens her son’s imagination, but the ongoing fantasy games he plays with an invisible friend quickly turn into something more disturbing. Upon seeing her family increasingly threatened by the strange occurrences in the house, Laura looks to a group of parapsychologists for help in unraveling the mystery that has taken over the place.
I’m a dumb bastard who hasn’t seen the original yet, but mark my words… if I ever needed a homework assignment in order to do so, seeing it before the remake comes out is it! No word on who will be starring in the film, as they’re now on the look-out for a lead actress.
