Caruso directs Space

One of the bigger sci-fi/horror video games to hit in the last 5 years has to be DEAD SPACE. Not only is it a game, but it’s spawned an animated movie, and now it looks like it’s making it’s way to the big screen courtesy of DISTRUBRIA director D.J. Caruso.

According to Variety, Caruso has signed up for the project with Electronic Arts on board to produce. Now the challenge is to find a writer to bring the video game to the big screen. Once a script is settled and in hand, they will start auctioning the film rights to studios and hopefully land one with a quickness.

As a reminder, DEAD SPACE is about an engineer who responds to a distress signal from a mining ship in deep space who finds the vessel infested with monstrous creatures called Necromorphs. The creatures are human corpses, reanimated by an alien virus.

All the images and screencaps I’ve seen from the game and the animated movie tell me that, if done right, the film version is going to be epic! And considering it’s from Caruso, I think we’ll be in good hands. But as he’s all about Shia LaBeouf… well, let’s just hope LaBeouf has something else to do. I just don’t like that guy, so not having him in this movie would be great.

With that in mind, EA and Caruso are expected to shop the script around starting in September… let’s hope they’re able to land it quickly! I see this as something awesome to look forward to in 2010!
