King’s Bag of Bones

Well, here’s something I’ve yet to become fully aware of. Director Mick Garris is elevating Stephen King’s novel, BAG OF BONES, from page to screen. Good stuff! Now, the reason I just learned this piece of info is because Garris and King are aiming to shoot the flick in Maine (a regular setting for most of Stephen’s books) this summer. The only issue is the Lobster-loving state’s film incentive program needs to be adjusted slightly.

To blow past all the legal and numbers mumbo-jumbo, all you really need to know is bottom line, it’s all about the Benjamin’s. The cash incentives that Maine offers to production companies just isn’t as much as other sates. However, it ain’t easy to find the kind of specifically serene landscapes that Maine offers, which would be ideal for King’s adaptation.

Hopefully Garris and company come to a decision soon because BONES certainly has one kick-ass plot that I’d love to check out on the big screen: After the sudden death of his wife Jo, author Mike Noonan is plagued by writer’s block; with his dreams haunted by the summer house he shared with her, he reluctantly decides to return to the isolated lakeside retreat.

There he finds his once beloved town in the grip of the powerful millionaire Max Devore, who twists this small community to his own purpose, attempting to take his young granddaughter away from her widowed young mother. As Mike becomes drawn into their struggle he falls in love with both of them and is further drawn into the mystery of this ghostly town.

The script was written by Matt Venne who also wrote my favorite FEAR ITSELF episode, SPOOKED Garris has already brought a number of King’s stories to life through flicks such as SLEEPWALKERS and THE STAND.

SLEEPWALKERS star Madchen Amick.
