THE CRAZIES is, in my mind, George Romero’s least appreciated work. In fact, I think it’s one of his very best. So obviously the fact that it’s getting remade irks me, but I also understand the mind set. At this point, nothing Hollywood does surprises me. But this remake will most likely have none of the original’s wit, or palpable feeling of humanity unraveling.
But how does Romero feel? The man was paying his dues at a Fangoria convention this past weekend and spoke on the topic; as usual, his attitude was relaxed, and even a little positive.
“I just actually read the script for the first time this weekend while I was here. I was never involved with anything in creating the remake, and I have no involvement with the new version of The Crazies at all. I know they have me listed as one of the Executive Producers on the project, and honestly, I am not sure why.”
“What I will say is that based on what I read, there are some really interesting things going on in the movie. I don’t know what their budget is or what the production value will be, but I think [The Crazies] has a decent shot of being a good movie.”
Encouraging words, but of course we’ll have to wait and see if Romero’s optimism pans out. THE CRAZIES, starring Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell (pictured below) hits theaters on SEPTEMBER 25th.
