Yes, MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D came and slaughtered the box office nicely, like an efficient horror slasher should. The weekend after it opened, I pondered the possibilities of an eminent sequel and then patiently waited for some “part 2 news” to swing out at us… Hold on, do you hear that? It sounds like… the swinging of a pick-axe!
Yes, it’s true! Our first morsel of BLOODY VALENTINE sequel news has just been tossed our way! And it is coming from a fairly reliable source: Producer John Dunning, who actually produced the 1981 original MBV and also served as an Executive Producer on the remake, told Fango some pretty interesting info regarding another BLOODY V. Have a look at what he said:
“Originally, I wrote a sequel to the original movie and submitted it to Lionsgate as MY BLOODY VALENTINE PART II. They still have my script, but it relates only to the story of the first film and not the new one. So I’ll be talking to the studio soon about using a few of the elements of my follow-up and, by changing parts of the storyline, adapting it into something that follows the new version.”
So, it sounds like Lionsgate may be using Dunning’s script as sort of a blueprint for their sequel. Well, at least they already have something to start with. I believe that the remake’s writers, Todd Farmer and Zane Smith, will be working on the new script with director Patrick Lussier most likely returning as well. And here’s a taste of how Dunning wanted to handle his part 2:
“The problem is that if you do MY BLOODY VALENTINE PART 2, how many ways can you kill people with a pickaxe? No one is going to come back and watch another nine or 10 people die like that, so it’s a question of coming up with a new concept. But the murders in my sequel are quite varied—there are just a couple of pickaxe deaths, and the rest are all very original and different.”
And don’t forget the 3D and nudity, sir.
