Cheap Red State

It appears that Kevin Smith is still talking up his transition-into-horror flick RED STATE… or is he talking down his flick? I’m speaking of course in terms of the budgetary department. Or rather, Mr. Smith is speaking in budgetary terms. Am I starting to sound like I’ve been drinking? Oh well, have a look at what Smith said during a recent interview and it should clear up my ramblings above:

“RED STATE needs to be cheap. Even the $5 million budget we’re looking for might be too much, in terms of return-on-investment. If I’m gonna get all experimental (or, at least, as experimental as I can get) in a genre in which I’ve never proven myself, with material that’s 180 degrees away from what I normally handle, it behooves me to be economical as f*ck.

It’s simply the human, decent thing to do to anyone who’s gonna pony up the funds. The flick is not a home run by any stretch of the imagination; it’s the riskiest thing I’ve ever done (if I even get to do it). Based on that, I think less is more, in this case.”

I’m not exactly sure why Smith would go right out and say his flick ain’t a homerun, but I also can’t help but respect his brutal honesty. You can always count on Silent Bob to tell it like it is, however for this one particular instance I kind of wish he wouldn’t. I want to experience RED STATE so badly, that I’d prefer to keep any negative feelings regarding it as far away as possible.

At least there is one positive I’m fairly certain of. If Smith needs only $5 million to make the flick, you can bet your bloody ass a profit will be returned. I already know that a number of members within our horror community would leap at the chance to shell out $10.50 to catch a new genre film from Kevin Smith. I guess, once again, we still have to wait and see.
