While this isn’t exactly horror, I’ve heard the subject matter is pretty “out there” and will appeal to more than a few of you. (Besides it’s a slow-ass news Friday, so I’m grasping at straws anyway.) Scott Derrickson, director of HELLRAISER: INFERNO and THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, has signed on to direct HYPERION CANTOS for Warner Bros.
The “Hyperion” books, by Dan Simmons, are apparently very popular although I’ve never even heard of them. Derrickson’s film will be a combination of two books – “Hyperion” and “The Fall of Hyperion”. Trevor Sands has the task of writing the screenplay, which will either be about 300 pages, or a complete bastardization of both stories…
The story is set in the distant future, as a space war threatens Hyperion, a planet known for the Time Tombs — large artifacts that can move through time and are guarded by a gruesome monster called the Shrike.
Space wars and gruesome monsters – those I can get behind. I have not seen Derrickson’s version of EARTH STOOD STILL but I have not heard good things. At all. If he doesn’t get this right, he’s risking having his house and family burned down by hordes of angry sci-fi geeks…
