H-fest fast to DVD

Anyone heard of this new horror movie “event” called HORRORFEST 2009? Apparently it opened this past weekend, but you could’ve fooled me. Yes, I am being a tad sarcastic right now. I know full well that this is the third offering of HORRORFEST’s 8 FILMS TO DIE FOR, but is it me or does this year’s circuit of sick cinema seem even more off the radar than usual? The theater by me that usually screens all eight of the films doesn’t even have them this year. And I can’t find any box office numbers on the flicks.

Perhaps After Dark Films is intentionally downplaying this year’s fest? Perhaps the quality of the current crop of flicks is the lowest yet? I hope not, but one major sign that, for me, points to yes is the recent announcement that After Dark Films will be releasing each of the eight films on DVD this March 31st! In case you didn’t instantly do the math in your head, that’s basically just two months away! HORRORFEST films have never come out on DVD that early. Personally, I feel that this takes away the exclusive excitement people get for being able to seek out the HORRORFEST movies on the big screen. If they’re just going to be out on DVD in a couple of weeks anyway, what’s the point of going out of your way to make a trip to the theater?

Like I said, I do hope I’m wrong and that HORRORFEST has got some hot genre commodities within its 2009 package. We can all know for sure when AUTOPSY, THE BROKEN, BUTTERFLY EFFECT: REVELATION, DYING BREED, FROM WITHIN, PERKIN’ 14, SLAUGHTER and VOICES hit DVD on March 31st.

It’s tough to concentrate on HORRFEST when MY BLOODY V 3D, with Megan Boone, opens this Friday!
