Roth’s Cotton picked

The BLAIR WITCH style of horror is all the rage nowadays. I can’t get too mad at it because a) obviously, you see where it’s cost-effective and b) if done well, it’s an asset not a crutch (see [REC]). But I had to applaud SOUTH PARK’s recent rip on the phenomena with their CLOVERFIELD/QUARANTINE parody, where you saw Randy intentionally, obnoxiously, moving the camera in a shaky way in and out of everyone’s faces while giant guinea pigs (!) roamed the town. If you missed it, it’s worth a look.

Which brings me to the newest in the motion-sickness genre, COTTON, which is apparently already completed, having just been picked up for distribution by StudioCanal. The horror pseudo-doc was produced by Eli Roth and directed by Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland. According to Variety, the story concerns an evangelical minister who turns against religion and decides to participate in a documentary in which he practices his last exorcism.

The idea of an exorcism ala [REC] kinda tickles me where I like it, so hopefully this thing was worth the acquisition. It reminds me a bit of a great unseen (for now) indie called PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, which also deals in the spooky world of demons and digital cameras…

[REC] cutie Manuela Velasco.
