My opinion is officially in limbo on this upcoming flick from Australia. I really want to like it because it falls under my beloved slasher genre, but I’m having trouble getting past it’s not quite original plot. Maybe you guys can help me out. It’s called SLEEPER and it stars Scott Levy (right) also known as Raven of WWF and WCW fame, and Bruce Hopkins (LORD OF THE RINGS). Here’s the plot:
Enigmatically silent, and driven by love, the man known as Resnik (Levy) was imprisoned for butchering another man and kidnapping the young girl at the heart of his obsession, Kelly (Kym Jackson, below). For the safety of his fellow inmates, Resnik was only ever allowed to wake, eat, and exercise alone, after dark… and he learned to like it.
Now having escaped during a midnight transfer, Resnik is headed back to Moonlight Bay, and Detectives Raynor (Hopkins) and Molloy (Ty Hungerford) have only 12 hours to stop him before the sun goes down and the carnage begins, again.
See what I’m getting at? I like the whole “trained to live in the dark” aspect, but the whole “escaping during a transfer to return to town” thing just seems so played out nowadays. It screams HALLOWEEN. Oh well, like ROB ZOMBIE’S HALLOWEEN as well as SEE NO EVIL, we’re getting a professional wrestler as the leading stalker. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because most buff wrestlers are used to being silently menacing anyway. I guess I’ll just have to see for myself if SLEEPER will be waking with fresh ideas for our genre. At least it helps to know that Australia certainly knows its horror (DEAD CALM, WOLF CREEK, UNDEAD, STORM WARNING, ROGUE).
