We’ve been hearing rumors of Wes Craven’s THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS and SHOCKER both getting the remake treatment for quite some time now, and it seems as though the former might be quite close. Craven talked to Shock Till You Drop and told them that Rogue (the production company behind the LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT remake) is interested in bringing back those wacky cellar-folk for a new generation.
Craven says: “There’s a pretty high likelihood Rogue would like to make People Under the Stairs as the next film we make… It will be a remake, not directed by me, but something Marianne Maddalena will produce after she completes The Last House on the Left.”
In case you’ve never seen it (it ain’t all that), THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS tells the story of an evil brother and sister landlords who keep disfigured children in their basement, along with a teenage girl they’re raising as their “daughter” (yeah, they’re pretty sick). A pesky young inner city kid breaks into their home to steal their riches, only to become trapped within the house of horrors.
Brief story: I met Craven years ago and actually asked him where he got the idea for this flick, and he told me he took the basic idea from a story he read in a newspaper! What a world… )
To be perfectly honest, this is a remake I can get behind. There’s lots of room to improve on the intriguing premise, and if cast right (how about Ron Perlman as the villain?) it could be a fun, and ghoulish, ride.
(P.S. Craven also says there might be a HILLS HAVE EYES 3. Zzzzzz…)
