When I saw this story pop up over at Variety, I couldn’t believe it. After three R rated TERMINATOR films spanning over 20 years of cinematic entertainment, Halcyon Co. announced today, the first day of production for TERMINATOR SALVATION: THE FIGHT BEGINS, that this new TERMINATOR will be more kid friendly, as they are shooting for a PG-13 rating.
No more ripping hearts out of chests by a naked cyborg, no more “F*ck you, asshole” lines to spout off to your friends later, no more extreme action set pieces, and definitely no more ruthless killing machine that actually ruthlessly kills. In comparison to this garbage, I will now give TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES mad props for manning up and delivering an R rated action flick.
We can thank LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD for this one, as producers saw a tradionally R rated franchise go PG-13 and make hella money at the box office–plus this way, they’ll be able to cut an action figures toy deal with Playmates Toys if they stick PG-13. Which is flipplin’ lame all in of itself, as I STILL have a few action figures from when TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY came out some 17 years ago. I guess even the business of action figures has gone pussy over the years…
This is a sad day indeed for those of us who grew up with THE TERMINATOR–those of us who are probably looking forward to more than a bunch of kids who weren’t even born with T2 came out. This just goes to show that showbusiness speaks louder than franchise integrity.
You may say to yourself, ‘But DIE HARD 4 delivered on the unrated DVD’ to which I sadly report that T4 has always had plans to be PG-13. Hence, there will be no trimming down to make it PG-13, the material is there for a kid friendly film starting directly with the script.
