There are a few legends in horror that shone bright in the 80s, and have continued to shine up through today. George A. Romero and his zombie series still continues to shine, Wes Craven still directs slashers and the oh-so forgiving werewolf movie, and special-effects / make-up man Tom Savini, still doing the effects, and even landing a few memorable acting roles along the way. Savini can now add another role under his belt: as Prester John in SEA OF DUST!
SEA OF DUST, starring Savini, Ingrid Pitt, Stuart Rudin, Suzie Lorraine, Edward X Young, and Laura Eff, is about… well, this is the best I could come up with: a mind bending tale of evil with lots of blood and gore, taking its name from the boundary separating reality from religious “truth,” a boundary epitomized by Prester John’s Sea of Dust. A stylistic tribute to the sixties work of Hammer Films and Italian genre director Mario Bava, incorporating the Prester John myth into its heady stew of surrealism, social satire, and comic invention.
