Atlantis Rises!

Looks like epic sci-fi thrillers are on the rise: in the last few weeks we’ve heard about HYPERION; about BATTLE: LOS ANGELES; about something called EARTH VS. MOON (which has the best title… ever).

Not that I’m complaining, I love big-budget invasion shite, although unfortunately Hollywood rarely gets it right (about half of ’05’s WAR OF THE WORLDS is an exception). Dreamworks is going to test out the genre with ATLANTIS RISING, based on Platinum Studios’ comic-book of the same name.

The sci-fi war epic centers around the dangerously deteriorated relations between surface dwellers and the inhabitants of the technologically advanced underwater city of Atlantis.

For thousands of years, the legendary continent of Atlantis has thrived unencumbered by those who live on Earth’s surface. Now after decades of surface pollution, from oil spills to off-shore dumping, the Atlantean way of life has been threatened, bringing the two civilizations to the brink of all-out war.

Sounds quite cool, but there’s bad news: the screenplay will be written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci – two guys who have managed to EFF up potentially awesome sci-fi flicks like THE ISLAND and TRANSFORMERS (alright, I know they had help making those movies unbearable, but still, those screenplays are wack). This movie will need some more “talent” behind the scenes before I get truly excited…

Even Scarlett’s considerable talents couldn’t save THE ISLAND.
