Barbarella is go?!

It’s been a little while since we’ve heard from BARBARELLA – not since last summer, really. We knew Robert Rodriguez was on board and that he envisioned his lady-love Rose McGowan (surprise, surprise) slinking into the lead character’s tights. But other than that, no real movement – in fact, rumors swirled that the studio, Universal, wasn’t thrilled with McGowan being cast in the lead role (although who the hell else did they expect Rodriguez to go with?) and the project just seemed to fall by the wayside…

Well, that may change – be changing already – if we’re to believe Ms. McGowan. According to her, not only is she still Barbarella, but the movie has been heavily into pre-production for quite some time.

She tells MTV: “[The news that I was out] was really irritating because I know all the people over there and obviously it wasn’t true. It was very malicious and there was no proof,” McGowan said of the rumors. “Oftentimes these things have basis in truth but this didn’t. I have contracts to prove it.”

More surprisingly, she reveals this: “Half of the sets have been built. The costumes are done,” the actress confessed, adding with a laugh that she’s “even got my spaceships. I’ve got part of a spaceship built for me!”

Where the F have we been? They’re building spaceships and shit? I didn’t even know the flick had a production designer yet…

Rose goes on to warn that you shouldn’t get your hopes up, as the possible actor’s strike in the summer might delay this flick, again. “[‘Barbarella’] wouldn’t be able to be finished before June which is when the next strike might happen… It’s a longer shoot.”

Well, as under the radar as this film is, they can probably continue the production without anyone being the wiser. Freakin’ Michael Parks and Danny Trejo could be on set, shooting their scenes right now, and we wouldn’t know.

What I DO know is I want to see Rose in an outfit like the one above. Not too much to ask, I don’t think…

She looks like she’s going to pounce!
