Robocop remake?

Buried within a press release about MGM getting itself a new Chairperson and Film division overseer is the revelation that ROBOCOP is apparently on the studio’s mind. Now while it doesn’t mention exactly what the incarnation will be, let’s not fool ourselves, we’re probably talking “reimagining” here. Because it should be pretty easy to top Paul Verhoeven’s brilliant and audacious genre-mix of sci-fi, dark satire, horror movie, tragedy, corporate thriller and even western. Hey, McG isn’t available, is he..? He’s not? Good.

Check out this snippet from the release:

MGM is planning an exciting fall and winter release schedule. In partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, MGM will bring new installments of two of its tentpole franchises — the new James Bond movie QUANTUM OF SOLACE and Steve Martin in PINK PANTHER 2. MGM will also release United Artists’ international thriller VALKYRIE, starring Tom Cruise on October 3. With the appointment of Parent, MGM will enter its new phase of evolution by focusing on its major movie franchises highlighted by JAMES BOND and PINK PANTHER sequels, THE HOBBIT, THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR 2, THE OUTER LIMITS, ROBOCOP, DEATH WISH and FAME, among others.

So, in other words, with the exception of VALKYRIE (which it’s only distributing), everything on MGM’s slate is either a sequel or a remake… Fantastic stuff. Do I have to mention that the idea of a ROBOCOP remake would be hilarious if it weren’t so depressingly believable? (Although you know who I’d pick if I could choose the director? Takashi Miike, baby!)

What’s interesting in the press release is the confirmation of DEATH WISH (by Sly Stallone) and the mention of THE OUTER LIMITS. Is that yet another version of the t.v. show, or will it be a feature film? I suppose I’m curious about that one… Oh, and FAME. That’s really exciting too…

Nancy Allen, aka, Robocop’s sexy partner, “Lewis.” Wonder if they ever got it on…
