Just the other day Jared let you know that beautiful Charlize Theron would be hovering over a modern classic of a film and urinating all over it – I mean, that she’d be producing and starring in a remake of Park Chan-Wook’s SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE. I’m passed being outraged – I think – at news like this. Plus, I the idea of remaking OLDBOY is a worse one, and thankfully that threatened project is currently stalled.
So imagine how surprised I was to discover that Ms. Theron actually has the original director’s blessing – or at least, that’s what she told MTV: “He made an almost perfect film [but] he came to me and said he really wanted us to do this. He wanted to see that story told in an American society,” Theron said of Park Chan-wook, whose “Lady Vengeance” completed a revenge trilogy that included “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance” and “Old Boy.” “If he wasn’t so encouraging I don’t think I could go through with it. We’re intimidated almost beyond belief.”
Apparently the world has gone f*ckin crazy. I have nothing but respect for Park, he’s one of the most interesting directors working today, and I anticipate each new release the way I would a Coen Bros. or Scorsese film. But c’mon, man! Just cuz you can’t beat the system doesn’t mean you have to join it! Okay, don’t mean to go all radical. Maybe there’s a genuinely good reason for this. But in the preliminary, this is just another case of “Why is this necessary?”
If Park actually signs on to direct this – and I don’t think he should, but IF he does – then I might be cautiously intrigued by this film. Otherwise, no. No thanks… And when the hell is “I’m a Cyborg But That’s Okay” coming out??
