Guillermo del Toro is like horror’s Ridley Scott – every two seconds he’s got another project in the pipeline. With 3993 and AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS already on his plate, del Toro, we have learned, has just commenced work on another special something for us genre fans to get giddy over – an adaptation of a thriller entitled HATER, originally written by David Moody.
Here’s the rundown:
Society is rocked by a sudden increase in the number of violent assaults on individuals. Christened ‘Haters’ by the media, the attackers strike without warning. Their attacks are brutal, remorseless and extreme. There are no apparent links between the Haters or their victims and no obvious reason for their violence. In seconds rational, controlled people become vicious killers. Everyone – irrespective of race, gender, age, sexuality or any other imaginable difference – has the potential to become either a Hater or a victim.
The project is set up at Universal (which will distribute HELLBOY II in July) and del Toro intends to direct. While the plot sounds a little familiar in the wake of stories like CELL and THE SIGNAL, in del Toro’s hands all bets are off. Frankly I don’t see how he’ll avoid the impulse to make “haters” out of little old ladies and infants, so my mental pictures are fairly wonderful right now (then again, I’m a sick, sick man). We’ll be working on getting you more info regarding HATERS, so as always, keep checking back!
