Did you know there was a CBS Films division? Right off the bat I’m asking the question because frankly I didn’t know there was one, but I suppose it makes sense, as where else would all those after school specials come from?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS Films have scooped up their latest film project, this one based off the young adult novel by Alex Flinn called BEASTLY. That’s right, young adult novel — and I’m not talkin’ a Penthouse Forums piece on that 18 year old nympho next door, I mean suitable reading for young adults (i.e., kids).

The book tells the story of a modern-day teacher who turns into a beast, complete with fangs and claws, after a student in his class puts him under a spell.
Aren’t you just bubbling with excitement over this one? In true Hollywood fashion, the novel of the same name hasn’t even been released yet, so who knows if it’s gonna be a hit (or if it’s any good), but I’m sure it must be decent for it to be picked up so fast.
Other than the rights being picked up, not a whole lot else can move forward at this point. With the writers strike still going strong, they’ll have to wait to adapt it to the small screen until that’s all over. CBS was hoping for a late 2008 release, but now it’s looking more like a winter 2009. Just long enough for those young adults who enjoyed the novel to not give a flying f*ck about it when the movie comes out.
Wow, I’m really bashing this one, aren’t I? Ok, I’ll end it with something positive: I always thought my 5th grade teacher was a beast of some sort, so it’s pretty damn cool this flick will take it to that level, confirming suspicions the world over. It’s gonna be awhile, but stay tuned as more news on BEASTLY breaks.
