The other day I tossed up an article revealing one of the stories being prepped for ABC’s horror-anthology, FEAR ITSELF – the show formally known as MASTERS OF HORROR. Now I’ve got another one for you – although the details are scarce, it exposes the major players and setting for John Carpenter’s entry.
According to an article on ShockTillYouDrop, the episode will be titled SKIN AND BONES, and it was written by Drew McWeeney (a.k.a. Moriarty from AintItCoolNews) and Scott Swan, who previously wrote both Carpenter episodes for MASTERS.
As to what the episode is about, like I said, not much is unveiled. McWeeney says it’s “a western with a slight supernatural bent to it… Finally, we’re doing a western with John Carpenter.” Of course, fans of Carpenter will note that the man loves himself some westerns, often citing RIO BRAVO as his favorite movie of all time (it of course served as an inspiration for ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 and GHOSTS OF MARS).
I know there are people who would consider this exciting news, but I’m not one of them. Hate to sound like a jerk, but I found that Carpenter’s episodes were not exactly highlights of the series. I don’t know if I’d blame the scripts, the actors (the performances in CIGARETTE BURNS – aside from Udo Kier – are terrible), or what, but while bloody and gory and all that good stuff, they were simply… bad. PRO-LIFE in particular was one of the very worst of the second season – a real shame considering guys like not-quite-a-Master-of-Horror Rob Schmidt were doing surprisingly good work for the show. I know I should try to subscribe to the “I’ll take what I can get” theory when it comes to Carpenter (who hasn’t made a truly decent flick since IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS), but it just hasn’t been working out the last few times out…
