Viggo walks Road

While we mostly deal in the horror of the slash/stab/hack/”get me the f*ck outta here” variety ’round the parts – sometimes we skip a bit off course for projects that warrant it… I’m doing such a thing here with the news that Viggo Mortensen is in talks to join THE ROAD.

For those unaware what THE ROAD is – stop reading for a sec, head on over to an online bookstore and buy that sucker, you won’t regret it. The book won the Pulitzer Prize for author Cormac McCarthy earlier this year – surely a first for a novel about two desperate, starving people wandering the burnt, ashy remains of America while avoiding cannibalistic hordes of deviants that would make the HILLS HAVE EYES clan piss their pants…

Okay, so it sounds like your basic post-apocalyptic horror show, but this it ain’t. The core of the story is the relationship between an unnamed father and son, who depend on each other for love, support – mostly sanity – as they walk “the road” south, looking for anything that doesn’t resemble hell. Yes, once and a while they run afoul of roving marauders who will defile anything they come across, but essentially it’s the story of instinctual survival (although I’d be hard-pressed not to kill myself if I lived in this world, I’ll tell you that).

Viggo is great for the role. The director, John Hillcoat, is also an ideal choice – he directed the bleak, violent western THE PROPOSITION. This movie, if done right, will become a modern classic for fans of all genres. (Alright, that ends my shameless pimping. Seriously though, it’s the shit.)
