From what I’ve heard, ILS (“Them”) is where-it’s-at in terms of invoking pure fear and tension in an audience (read how even the Arrow’s ass was spanked by the French flick HERE). The chiller about a couple harrassed within their home by unseen villains is supposed to be as terrifying as anything in years. Of course, it’s getting a remake (cuz it was made in ‘06, so it’s pretty old already) – actually two, if you count the very similar-sounding THE STRANGERS, starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman.
Now it’s finally going to be possible for us North Americans to be scared shitless by THEM as Dark Sky Films will be releasing the film on August 17. N.Y. and L.A. will be the first to receive this sinister slice of escargot, with other cities to follow shortly after.
It irks me to no end that, if indeed this movie is as awesome as it’s been made out to be, it’s getting just a limited release – while the sure-to-be-inferior remake will probably hit about 3,000 screens. I live in N.Y., so I’ll be lucky enough to check it out, but so many people will be denied a theatrical experience (and I think this is indeed a film to be seen in a dark theater).
I know this is a question with obvious answers, but still, What the f*ck?! Same goes for THE HOST, which was wonderful entertainment, but also requires a remake. Why, because we have to read a little? In the case of ILS, I don’t even think there’s all that much dialogue – just simmering suspense. But no, it was made somewhere else, a mass output is unacceptable. (the only bright spot is that original directors Xavier Palud and David Moreau may be involved in some capicity.)
