January of 2006 unleashed one of the biggest surprise hits of the season, when Eli Roth’s HOSTEL hit theaters, scoring about $20M in it’s first weekend alone. For a January opening- and for an opening of a torturous horror movie, that was pretty damn impressive, and it was obvious that there’d be a sequel made right away.
This past weekend HOSTEL: PART II was unleashed upon audiences everywhere, and unfortunately for Lionsgate and Roth, PART II did not do as well as it’s predecessor. In fact, it did about half as much over the weekend, scoring a mediocre $8.8M, and coming in 6th place overall.
Given, it had some stiff competition, with OCEAN’S THIRTEEN and SURF’S UP hitting theaters as well, and yes, for a hard R rated horror flick, you might say it did pretty well (and will definitely be profitiable, as the budget was right around $10M anyway). But could it have done better being released in the off season, and not during the summer? Should they have advertised PART II the same way they advertised PART I, putting Quentin Tarantino’s name BIGGER than Eli Roth’s (tricking those that thought HOSTEL was a Tarantino movie)?
Hard to say at this point, but one thing’s for sure: don’t count on a HOSTEL PART III anytime soon. Maybe a STD feature might still be had in the future, but I doubt it.
