First of all, if you’ve never seen Vincenzo Natali’s CUBE, then put that thing on your Netflix queue quick-style and give it a look. When I saw it after its initial release, it was an inspiration to me, not necessarily because it was utterly brilliant, but because it showed that ingenuity can trump a low budget every time (in telling the story of characters journeying from room to room in an endless maze, the film utilized only one set, but it was told so effectively that this is never distracting or detrimental). The director obviously had an imagination, as well as a healthy passion for gore (CUBE was springing wicked traps and chopping people up before FINAL DESTINATION or SAW).
Natali’s got a new flick being prepared, and it seems a doozy. It’s called SPLICE and it deals with genetic experimentation, and presumably the horrid after-effects of f*cking around with Mother Nature.
Natali told Shocktillyoudrop: “SPLICE is very much about our genetic future and the way science is catching up with much of the fiction out there,” Natali posits. “[This] is a serious film and an emotional one. And there’s sex… Very unconventional sex. The centerpiece of the movie is a creature which goes through a dramatic evolutionary process. The goal is to create something shocking but also very subtle and completely believable.”
Hmm, unconventional sex, dangerous science, and creatures going through evolutionary crises? Sounds Cronenberg-ian, which is perfectly fine with me.
For those looking for a quicker Natali fix, he’s one of 20 directors who contributed to “PARIS, JE T’AIME” along with the likes of Wes Craven, The Coen Brothers, Gus Van Sant, and Alfonso Cuaron.
